You found the perfect dress (squeee!), booked your dream venue, and hired a fabulously talented wedding photographer. Now comes the fun part: choosing your wedding cake! Although these days your options for dessert at your reception extend way beyond traditional cake--or even the ever-popular cupcake.
If you’re going the traditional cake route, there are loads of options, from different shapes, tiers, frostings, fillings, you name it. Add accents to your cake that reflect your color scheme. Choose a cake that reflects the style of your wedding, whether you’re a modern girl or a beach bum. If you’re having a formal affair, you might want a dramatic cake to match the mood.
What about a cake topper? This is a chance to add a unique or personal touch, or even be silly. Flowers are always a popular choice, or a set of figurines to represent you guys, but lately I’ve seen some LOL choices including custom-made bobbleheads!
The cupcake craze is still going strong, probably because it’s such an easy way to please everybody, since you can can serve multiple flavors and sizes. Just like with a traditional cake, there are oodles of choices to make here: minis or full-sized? Frosting, filling, cake flavors?
Or, if you like to break completely from tradition, go for something totally different. How about an ice cream sundae bar? Cookies and milk? Chocolate fondue?
Keep in mind that if you do go another route than a wedding cake, you’ll miss out on all of the wedding cake traditions, including cutting the cake and saving and freezing the top tier to eat on your first anniversary. But you could totally still do the cake-in-the-face smash with cupcakes!
My last bit of wisdom here is a yummy one: Whatever you choose to serve as dessert, make sure you test it out before you serve it to your guests! Trust me, the cake tasting will be one of your fiance’s favorite part of wedding planning
